Villa Maly Debuts Mouhot’s, a bar par excellence

19 March 2010  — Villa Maly, the refurbished former residence of Lao royalty, has reconfigured the first floor of the historic old villa at the heart of this upscale property, eschewing a boutique for an exquisite marble bar.

The bar — Mouhot’s — was named for a Luang Prabang notable, the French naturalist renowned for rediscovering the temples of Angkor in the mid 19th Century and who later died near Luang Prabang.

Opening in mid-March, Mouhot’s broadens the appeal of the elegant boutique hotel by broadening the guest base.

“It used to be that only guests of the hotel absorbed the ambiance of this fine, old place,” said Marie-Helene Machevin, the hotel’s general manager. “Now it should be a destination for anyone with a yen for a bit of history, or a thirst.”
